Golden Bears Win Fourth Straight at Nichols

Box Score DUDLEY, Mass.--Emily Savino scored a game-high 19 points and Katie Eckert added 11 to lead a Western New England 3-point barrage that yielded a 54-49 win at Nichols in Commonwealth Coast Conference women's basketball action at the Bison Athletic Center on Saturday. The Golden Bears won their fourth consecutive game to improve to 4-1 overall, including 2-0 in the CCC, while the Bison fall to 2-2 and 0-2 in the conference.

Senior Hayley Zophin scored a season-high 19 points and grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds to pace, Nichols, which also received a double-double from sophomore Alexis Wegrzynek with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Western New England knocked down seven 3-point field goals in the opening 12 minutes – including three from Savino and three more from Eckert – to build a 24-13 lead. The Bison reeled off a 6-0 run to close the gap to five points with 2 minutes and 19 seconds remaining in the first half before the Golden Bears settled down defensively and took a 31-23 lead into the break.

The Golden Bears opened the second half on a 14-4 run and built a 45-27 lead, sparked by eight points from senior Elena Radzikowski (12 points, 6 rebounds). Nichols clawed its way back into the game at 50-41 with six minutes left, but couldn't put together a huge run that would have given it its first lead since the 15:34 mark of the first on a Wegrzynek jumper.

The Bison outrebounded the Golden Bears 45-38 but shot just 52 percent from the charity stripe.

Savino also dished four assists and pulled down a team-best eight rebounds. Freshman Chelsea Vujs picked up seven rebounds, two assists and two steals, while Eckert had six rebounds.

Western New England had its best contest of the young season shooting from the perimeter, making 10 of 25 attempts from the arc for 40.0 percent. In fact, the Golden Bears fared better from 3-point land than they did from the floor overall (31.5, 17-54).
