MIDDLETOWN, Conn.--Western New England University couldn't overcome season lows in two key phases of the game on Tuesday during a 55-42 loss at Wesleyan in women's basketball non-conference action at Silloway Gym, as the Golden Bears saw their four-game winning streak come to an end. Western New England slips to 4-2 overall while the Cardinals improve to 5-1.
Emily Savino led Western New England with 14 points to pace all scorers, four assists and five steals to go along with six rebounds, and freshman
Chelsea Vujs added seven points, a game-high nine rebounds, two blocked shots and three steals.
Amber Wessells led three Cardinal scorers in double figures with 12 points, followed by Kendra Harris with 11 and Miller Hartsoe came off the bench to net 10. Wessells added six steals and six assists, and Dreisen Heath pulled down seven rebounds.
The Golden Bears allowed 13 points more than its season scoring defense of 41.6 per game and shot a season worst 29.2 percent from the field.
Wesleyan took advantage of a cold-shooting WNE squad to take a 29-12 lead in the first half when the Golden Bears made only 4 of 22 field goal attempts for 18.2 percent.
After falling behind by 21 points in the second half, the Golden Bears mounted a huge 27-8 run over a 10-minute span to pull within 41-39 at the 6:16 mark. Vujs scored seven points early to spark the comeback.
Wesleyan, however, responded with an 8-0 run of its own to take back control, ignited by a KellyAnn Rooney 3-pointer.
