Western New England falls to host UNE 76-52 in the final game of the regular season

BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Western New England women's basketball team dropped a 76-52 decision to the University of New England in the final game of the regular season for both squads Saturday afternoon (Feb. 18) at Beaudry Gymnasium.

The Golden Bears are now 13-12 overall and 12-6 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC). The Nor'easters improved to 21-4 and captured first place in the conference with a 16-2 mark.

Despite the loss, Western New England earned the third seed in the CCC Championship, which begins Tuesday (Feb. 21) at campus sites. The Golden Bears will host sixth-seeded Eastern Nazarene (13-12, 10-8 CCC) at 7:00 p.m. in the Alumni Healthful Living Center.

WNE scored only six points in the last six minutes of the opening half to trail 37-23 at the break. The hosts then maintained their double digit advantage all throughout the second half.

Senior forward Margo Russell (Madison, ME) led three players in double figures with 25 points and six rebounds. Junior forward Beth Suggs (Bath, ME) added 18 points and seven rebounds while sophomore guard Lauren Rousseau (Biddeford, ME) contributed 12 points. Senior guard Kari Pelletier (South Paris, ME) chipped-in with nine points and eight assists.

Western New England received 11 points from junior guard Emily Savino (Ellington, CT) and eight from both sophomore guard Ali Pessolano (Hampden, MA) and junior center Elena Radzikowski (Medway, MA). Sophomore guard Katie Eckert (Lee, MA) netted seven points with four rebounds. Eckert and Pessolano each had two assists and two steals.

University of New England shot 44.0% from the field and made 9-of-18 three pointers. The Nor'easters also connected on 23-of-28 free throws for 82.1%, and held a slight 36-32 edge in rebounding.

WNE turned the ball over 24 times and shot only 35.2% from the floor, but did connect on 6-of-14 three-pointers in addition to shooting 80% from the charity stripe.
