Errors prove costly as Western New England drops a pair of games against Amherst

AMHERST, Mass. –The Western New England softball team made eight errors in dropping a non-conference doubleheader to Amherst by the scores of 5-1 and 15-4 Wednesday afternoon (Apr. 11). The Golden Bears saw their record drop to 8-12 while the Lord Jeffs are now 24-1.

Amherst freshman right fielder Donna Leet (Seattle, WA) went 6-for-7 with a triple, two runs scored, and four runs-batted-in. She also set a school record for most RBI in a season (34).

Game 1 – Amherst 5, Western New England 1

Western New England took a 1-0 lead in the first when senior first base player Sara Barnes (Berkley, MA) walloped her first homer of the season. She had two of the team's five hits.

Amherst came right back by scoring three times in the bottom of the first on a RBI triple by Leet who went 3-for-3, and a two-run homer by junior second base player Reilly Horan (Darien, CT).  The hosts then added single runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.

Junior pitcher Theresa Kelley (Los Angeles, CA) settled down after allowing Barnes' blast and finished with 11 strikeouts with no walks. Freshman catcher Kelsey Ayers (Los Altos, CA) contributed a single and double.

Western New England committed four errors that led to three unearned runs.

Senior Sarah Lempicki (Plantsville, CT) pitched the first five innings giving up six hits, four runs (two earned) with three strikeouts and no walks. She is now 4-3 this season.

Game 2 – Amherst 15, Western New England 4 (5 innings)

The Golden Bears again took an early lead by scoring four runs in the first inning and again made four errors that led to 11 unearned runs.

The Lord Jeffs took advantage of the miscues by scoring two runs in the bottom of the first, and three times in both the second and third innings before putting the game out of reach with seven runs in the fourth.

Lempicki, who served as the designated player, had a single and double along with a run scored and RBI. Barnes and freshman left fielder Avery Clark (Mystic, CT) had the other hits for the Golden Bears. Senior Alyssa Obin (Plymouth, MA) (4-5) was the losing pitcher.

Senior first base player Carly Dudzik (Darien, CT) led the 14-hit attack by going 4-for-4 with double, homer, two runs scored, and five RBI. Ayers added a single, double, triple, three runs, and five runs-batted-in. Leet also had three hits, including a triple, along with a run and three RBI.

Kelly pitched four-and-two-third innings of perfect relief giving up one hit while striking out six to improve her record to 14-0.
