KEENE, N.H.--The Western New England University women's volleyball team picked up a couple of non-conference wins on Saturday at Keene State in Spaulding Gym, defeating Eastern Connecticut State 25-17, 21-25, 22-25, 25-20, 15-8, and the host Owls 25-13, 23-25, 25-17, 25-18. The Golden Bears extend their winning streak to four matches to move to 11-1 on the season.
"Our team came into the afternoon focused and ready to play," Western New England coach Bret Stothart said after the second match. "I was really proud how well everyone came together and that was key in helping us pull out two tough wins.
"We certainly struggled in certain areas on the court, but we never got down (on each other) and we just continued to fight hard together," he said.
Against the ECSU Warriors (5-8),
Kelsey Armstrong spiked a WNE-best 13 kills,
Devyn Frank added eight and
Heather Mears contributed 45 assists to pace the offense.
But it was the defense that seemingly carried the Golden Bears, who improve to 3-0 in five-setters this season. Western New England held East Conn to a minus-0.59 attack percentage (while hitting .211 itself) in the decisive stanza.
Grace Kucharski led all players with 23 digs and
Tyler Singh posted five blocks to go along with eight kills.
Then versus the Owls (6-8), freshman
Emily McGran exploded for a career-high 16 kills while hitting .286 and recording three digs. Armstrong added 11 kills and Frank contributed eight kills and five blocks. Kucharski topped the 20-dig mark (21) for the third time in her last four matches.
