Golden Bears Throttle Gordon in CCC Action

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--The Western New England University women's volleyball team was clicking on all cylinders on Friday during a 25-6, 25-12, 25-20 victory over Gordon College at the Alumni Healthful Living Center field house, kicking off Homecoming Weekend on the WNE campus. The Golden Bears improve to 12-2 on the season, including 2-1 in Commonwealth Coast Conference play, while the Fighting Scots drop to 9-6 overall and 1-3 in the league.

Within a span of 48 hours and playing a pair of CCC matches at home, Western New England went from playing its worst match of 2012 to its best. On Wednesday, the Golden Bears fell to Salve Regina in four sets while hitting a season-low .055. But tonight was much different as the team rebounded to attack with high efficiency for a .364 percentage.

Devyn Frank and Kasey Cameron led the WNE offense with eight and seven kills, respectively. They combined to commit just one error in 25 attack attempts, averaging a .565 conversion rate. Rachel Meachem came off the bench to lead all players with 17 assists, while senior co-captain Heather Mears added 15.

Gordon was led by Lauren Kranyak who posted seven kills and six digs, and Keri Hustus had eight digs.

Grace Kucharski paced the Golden Bears defensively with 15 digs--almost half of what Gordon recorded as a team (31). Western New England finished with 54, frustrating Gordon by keeping many balls in play. The Fighting Scots were forced into hitting a minus-.011 percentage, which is a season's best for the WNE defense.

The Golden Bears hit .423 on 26 swings with only two errors to take the first set in convincing fashion, 25-6. Kendra Ouimette had three service aces and Cameron connected on three kills for a 6-0 lead before Gordon called timeout, setting the tone for a quick start.

Then in the second set, WNE hit for a higher average at .522 on 14 kills in 23 attempts and only two errors to win 25-12 for a commanding two-sets-to-none advantage.

The start of the match was delayed 30 minutes because Gordon's trip here was affected by heavy rain and traffic.

The Golden Bears performed the community service project "Play for a Cause: Autism Awareness," providing information about the disease, accepting donations on behalf of the Autism Society of America, and wearing specially-colored socks and hair ribbons.
