DANBURY, Conn.--The Western New England University women's soccer team built an early 2-0 lead at Western Connecticut State on Wednesday, but in the end the Golden Bears had to settle for a 2-2 draw in double overtime with the Colonials. Both teams are now 2-0-1 on the season after their non-conference match-up at The WAC.
The Golden Bears--who are off to their best start since 1998 (3-0 on the way to a 20-2 campaign)--got on the scoreboard just 1 minute and 55 seconds into the contest when Chelsey Kuzio lofted a ball over Caitlin Avery from 30 yards out. Kuzio was set up with a pass from midfield by
Tayler Mazurski.
In the 18th minute, Western New England took advantage on another miscue from the Colonials' defense to go up 2-0. Mazurski took a free kick nearly 10 yards outside the box and the ball deflected off Western Connecticut's into the back corner of the goal.
Lisa Sanzari drew WCSU within 2-1 in the 39th minute on her first goal of the season, assisted by Kelsey Chacho's quick pass on the endline. Ariana D'Aurio tied it at 2-all in the 48th minute to set up the extra 20-minute session.
Both teams had scoring opportunities in the 10-minute overtime periods with four shots apiece. But for the game, WCSU peppered the Western New England goal with 27 shots to the Golden Bears' 11.
Both keepers--Briana Kubic for Western New England and Avery for the Colonials--made five saves each.
