NEWPORT, R.I. - Western New England built a nine-point lead in the first half at Salve Regina on Thursday night, but couldn't sustain that momentum in the second as the host Seahawks came back to earn a 70-48 win in Commonwealth Coast Conference women's basketball action at the Rodgers Recreation Center. The Golden Bears dip below the .500-mark at 6-7 overall, including 3-3 in the CCC, while Salve Regina improves to 6-6 and 3-2 in the conference.
Emily Savino scored 13 points for the Golden Bears to move into 11th place on the program's all-time scoring list with 1,171 for her career. The senior co-captain surpassed Jamie Carney, who had 1,165 points from 2000 to 2003.
Freshman
Chelsea Vujs added a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds to go along with three blocked shots for Western New England, which also got a career-high eight points from freshman
Sarah Shields.
Salve Regina was paced by Meaghan Harden who posted a game-best 26 points, followed by Marissa Pendergast with 14 and Cortney Rosenlund had 11.
Things started well enough for the Golden Bears who took a 24-15 lead with 8 minutes and 21 seconds remaining. Savino scored four points and Shields made a 3-point field goal as part of a 7-0 run.
But the Seahawks closed the first half on a 20-9 run to take a 35-33 advantage at the intermission, fueled by Rosenlund's 10 points.
The teams traded points to start the second half as Western New England tied the game at 43-all on a
Shelby Van Huysen trey.
Then with SRU leading 50-48 at the 11:31 mark, the Seahawks took control by ending the contest on a 20-0 run. In their last 18 possessions, the Golden Bears missed nine field goals and turned the ball over nine times.
Despite a 43-31 rebounding average, Western New England committed 26 turnovers and didn't attempt a single free throw. Salve Regina, which shot 43 percent from the field compared to a 36 clip by WNE, made 14 of 19 free throws.
