Emily Savino pumped in a game-high 25 points, and freshman
Chelsea Vujs added a double-double with 14 points and a game-best 12 rebounds, as Western New England defeated host Wentworth Institute of Technology, 56-42, in Commonwealth Coast Conference women's basketball action at Tansey Gymnasium on Thursday. With their fourth straight win, the Golden Bears improve to 12-8 overall and 9-4 in the CCC, while the Leopards drop to 9-11 overall and 4-9 in conference play.
Western New England was able to get off to a strong start on the road, building a 17-7 lead 11 minutes into the game, and even going up by as much as 14 on a layup by Vujs with five minutes left in the first half. A
Sam McCann jumper with two seconds on the clock gave the Golden Bears a 30-19 lead at the break.
The Leopards appeared poised to make a comeback early in the second half, cutting Western New England's lead down to seven on a 3-pointer by Ashley Conway three minutes in. The Golden Bears, however, scored the next seven points to go back up by 14, and they would not let their lead get below double digits for the remainder of the contest.
Vujs had a huge night for Western New England, which has won six of its last seven outings, with five assists added to her team-leading seventh double-double of the season for good measure. McCann had her second consecutive solid game off the bench, recording eight points and five rebounds. Savino chipped in seven rebounds.
Wentworth was led by forward Kendra Kerr (11 points, 10 rebounds) and Conway, who finished with 12 points, had two rebounds and two assists.
The Leopards were doomed by an extremely poor shooting night, making only 16-of-59 field goal attempts (27.1%). Western New England shot the ball considerably better, going 21-for-47 from the field (44.7%).
The Golden Bears will look to extend their winning streak Saturday afternoon, when Endicott makes the trip out to Springfield. Western New England will need to win to avoid falling back into a tie with the Gulls for third place in the CCC.
