SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--The Western New England University volleyball team--behind
Kelsey Armstrong match-highs of 11 kills and .348 hitting (with a minimum 10 attack attempts)--took out its frustrations of a five-match losing streak by dismantling visiting Curry College on Tuesday evening by scores of 25-16, 25-11, 25-12 in Commonwealth Coast Conference action at the Alumni Healthful Living Center field house. The Colonels drop to 8-11 overall, including 0-2 in the CCC; the 11-5 Golden Bears, meanwhile, pick up their first conference win in three starts and put an emphatic end to the longest losing streak in the Bret Stothart coaching era.
The Western New England offense was clicking on all cylinders by registering a season-high .413 attack percentage on a mix of swings, and had
LESS hitting errors (11) than Curry had kills (15).
Maureen Pollet added six kills and .500 hitting on eight attempts, and
Kasey Cameron chipped in five and .571 on seven.ÂÂ
Emily Boudreau led Curry with six kills, Makayla Hughes had seven assists, and Lauren Gaffney got to eight digs.
Western New England jumped out to a 5-1 in the first set before the Colonels regrouped and eventually went ahead 8-7 on a WNE attack error. Pollet then connected for back-to-back kills to ignite a 7-1 run to put the Golden Bears up 14-9 and they never trailed again in the match.
In the second set, freshman setter
Jessica Sincero had four of her career-high five aces during the same serving rotation, as part of a Golden Bears 6-0 run to go up 14-5. Sincero finished with 23 assists and six kills.
Western New England continued to lead wire-to-wire in the final stanza, hitting at a .467 clip in the third to win 25-12. Armstrong punctuated the win with a kill down the left line for match-point.
