Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--Host Smith College jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the first half from which the Western New England University field hockey team couldn't overcome in a 10-1 non-conference loss to the Pioneers on Thursday. The Golden Bears fall to 2-10 on the season, while Smith broke a two-game losing streak to improve to 9-2.
Freshman
Hillary Naranjo-Mejia scored her first career goal for the Golden Bears, who trailed only 2-1 in the 18th minute.
But the Pioneers put some distance between themselves and WNE with five goals over the last 17 minutes of the first half to go up 7-1 at the intermission.

Jessica Hale were kept under constant pressure facing 33 shots, as the duo combined for 14 saves. Sophomore tri-captain
Katherine Ferrari recorded her team-best 11th defensive save while Naranjo-Mejia picked up her first.
"Kat (Ferrari) played well today despite the loss. She made a number of goal line saves that helped us tremendously," Golden Bears coach Sarah Kelly said after the game.
Smith's Allie Stein led all scorers with four goals and two assists for 10 points, becoming the school's all-time leading scorer with 188 career points on 73 goals and 42 assists.

Shannon O'Rourke had two of WNE's five shots on the day.
Western New England returns to Commonwealth Coast Conference action at 1 p.m. Saturday against Endicott College--the first of a three-game homestand at Golden Bear Stadium.
