Visiting Gulls Build First-Half Lead to Defeat Field Hockey, 6-1

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Endicott College scored four times in the first half en route to a 6-1 win at Western New England University in Commonwealth Coast Conference field hockey action at Golden Bear Stadium on Saturday, which marked WNE's "Play4theCure" game to support the National Foundation for Cancer Research. The visiting Gulls improve to 6-7 overall and 3-3 in the CCC, while the Golden Bears fall to 2-11 on the season and 1-6 in the league.

Freshman Shannon O'Rourke and senior tri-captain Jaynie Mueller combined on the Golden Bears' lone goal in the 24th minute, cutting the deficit to 3-1 at the time. Mueller took a pass from outside the circle and fed her team-leading fourth assist to O'Rourke at the left post, who scored her third goal of the season. Mueller tied Jessica Scannapieco for the team lead with 12 points, while O'Rourke leads WNE freshmen with three goals and two assists for eight points.

Endicott got goals from six different players including Emily Sawchuck who had four points (2 assists) and Elizabeth LeClair, Mackenzie Hurst (1 assist each) with three apiece.

Western New England freshman goalie Emily Arnold made 12 saves for her fourth double-digit performance as she was used as an emergency starter after classmate Jessica Hale was injured in pregame warm-ups.

Sophomore Sabrina Lyesiuk and Mueller led the Golden Bears with two shots apiece.

Western New England continues a three-game homestand on Wednesday (7 p.m.) against Gordon College in a conference match-up at Golden Bear Stadium.
