Ryan Williams Scores Late Goal as Men's Soccer Forges 2-2 Tie at Curry in CCC Action

Box Score MILTON, Mass.--Senior Ryan Williams scored in the 82nd minute as visiting Western New England earned a gutsy 2-2 draw in double overtime at Curry in Commonwealth Coast Conference men's soccer action Wednesday evening at Walter M. Katz Field. The first-place Golden Bears now stand at 10-3-2 overall after extending their CCC (4-1-1) unbeaten streak to five games, while the Colonels are 6-5-3 on the season and 2-2-2 in the conference.

Western New England twice came back from one-goal deficits to knot the score--but at no point more important than when Williams netted his third of the season just a minute and 30 seconds after Samuel Babchuck put Curry up 2-1 in the 81st minute with his first tally.

Both teams had chances to score in both 10-minute extra sessions. Curry dominated the first overtime as Cameron Bartley's shot went wide in the 92nd minute and then WNE keeper Domenick Villano stymied Tim Stein and Ryan Madden in the 95th and 96th. With 36 seconds left, Chad Barrett's header for the Golden Bears was saved by Nick Barber.

Western New England turned up the heat in the second overtime by outshooting Curry 4-2. Barber had to make back-to-back saves on Ryan Dickinson and Jon Axton 56 seconds apart in the final minute to preserve the tie.

Matt Cotnoir led the Colonels with a goal and an assist, giving Curry a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute.

The Golden Bears, however, responded 17 minutes later on senior Axton's second goal in as many games.

Villano, a senior co-captain, ended up with 11 saves to equal a season high. For his part, Barber stopped 14 Golden Bear shots.

Western New England had slim advantages in shots (24-21), shots on goal (16-13) and corner kicks (7-4). Dickinson, a freshman, came off the WNE bench to lead all players with four shots and three on target.

The Golden Bears return to CCC play at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Eastern Nazarene in Quincy.
