Women's Soccer Nipped by Lions in CCC Road Match, 1-0 in Overtime

Box Score QUINCY, Mass.--Freshman Katherine Lawrence netted the game-winning goal in the 95th minute as the Eastern Nazarene women's soccer team edged Western New England, 1-0, in a nail-biter Saturday afternoon on homecoming weekend at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The victory propels the Lions to 9-6 overall, snapping a five-game losing streak, and 2-4 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference while the Golden Bears drop to 8-6-2 on the season and 2-3-1 in league play.

The Lions potted the sudden-victory goal 5 minutes into the extra session as Lawrence dribbled to the middle of the penalty box before firing a left-footed strike into the left-side netting. The tally was Lawrence's eighth of the year.

Neither squad could find the back of the net in the second period as both sides rang a shot off of the woodwork.

Western New England's Katelyn Cummings rifled a free kick on frame in the 71st minute, forcing Eastern Nazarene goalkeeper Kristen Farley to parry the ball off of the crossbar. Avery Clark's follow-up attempt bounced just wide of the goal.

Tina Corey nearly broke the scoreless tie in the 87th minute for the Lions, but her header attempt ricocheted off of the right post.

The two teams headed into the halftime intermission knotted at 0-0. Eastern Nazarene held a 7-3 advantage in shots at the midway point of the match while Western New England owned a 2-1 edge in corner kicks.

Eastern Nazarene concluded the contest with 27 shots while WNE generated 12 on the afternoon. Bonnie Bousquet led the visitors with five.

Farley finished the game with four saves for her sixth shutout this fall, while Briana Kubik stopped seven shots in the Golden Bears goal.

Up next, Eastern Nazarene will host Wentworth at Veterans Memorial on Tuesday, when WNE will play host to Salve Regina in CCC action at Suprenant Field.
