Shannon O'Rourke Pours in Four Goals as Golden Bears Blank Roger Williams on the Road

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I.--Freshman Shannon O'Rourke potted a Western New England season-best four goals and the Golden Bears defense did the rest in a 4-0 victory over host Roger Williams in Commonwealth Coast Conference field hockey action on Friday evening. Western New England snapped a six-game losing streak to improve to 3-14 overall and 2-9 in the CCC, while the Hawks drop to 4-12 on the season and 0-10 in the conference.

O'Rourke's career night began in the 44th minute when she broke a scoreless tie with her fourth goal of the season, getting a put back off of a deflected save. That ignited a four-goal explosion for the visitors in a span of 8 minutes and 4 seconds as O'Rourke also had tallies in the 46th, 51st and 52nd minutes.

Sophomore Sabrina Lyesiuk and senior tri-captain Jaynie Mueller also registered points on assists for WNE. Lyesiuk figured in the second goal as she brought the ball down the middle of the field and then dished O'Rourke in the circle. Mueller fed O'Rourke for her third goal when she centered a pass from the right side.

With seven goals on the season, O'Rourke has now overtaken the team lead for both goals and total points (16).

Roger Williams took a 5-4 lead in shots during the first half, but WNE applied more pressure in the second with a 9 to 5 advantage to end up 13-10 for the game. The Golden Bears also enjoyed a 12-4 edge in penalty corners.

Freshman goalie Emily Arnold made four saves to post her first career shutout for WNE, which blanked an opponent for the first time since a 6-0 triumph versus Elms on Sep. 25, 2012.

Hailey Wolfe tried to generate some offense for Roger Williams with team highs of four shots and two shots on goal.

Western New England will have its regular-season finale next Saturday (1 p.m.) at CCC opponent Endicott in Beverly, Mass.
