Balanced Offense Carries Golden Bears to Thrilling 5-Set Win at CCC Rival Endicott

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BEVERLY, Mass.--Kasey Cameron led a balanced offense with a team-best 14 kills as Western New England went on the road to knock off Endicott in a five-set thriller, 25-19, 20-25, 26-24, 15-25, 15-10, at MacDonald Gymnasium on Saturday. The Golden Bears--at 4-2 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference--picked up their second win in 14 all-time meetings against the Gulls (5-2 CCC), who defeated nationally-ranked and four-time defending CCC champion Roger Williams earlier this season.

Western New England also swept Worcester Polytechnic Institute (7-19 overall) 25-22, 25-14, 25-19 this afternoon, extending its winning streak to four matches and improving to 19-7 overall.

"The win over Endicott was important for us, not only because it's another conference victory but it was important we prove to ourselves that we can win tight matches if we support each other and stay aggressive," said WNE coach Bret Stothart.

"WPI played a strong match and forced us to play at a high level throughout each set. We stay focused and finished the day reaching our goal, coming away with two wins.

"We played with a ton of heart today and it's great to see what we can accomplish when we really want it and won't accept anything less than our best," he said.

Cameron, who hit .353 with only two errors in 34 attack attempts, led four teammates in double-figure kills as Devyn Frank had 13 (.367), Kelsey Armstrong made 11 (.200) and Tyler Singh added 10 (.222).

Endicott was led offensively by Mackenzie Guerre's 15-kill, 2-error, 35-attack performance as she hit a match high .371. The sophomore also collected five total blocks. Callie Dolan was close behind as she picked up 14 kills while taking a school-record 65 attempts. Alleigh VandeMerkt tallied 39 assists to lead the Gulls offense as she also picked up 18 digs, second on the team to freshman Erika Trudon's 24.

The WNE setting split between freshman Jenna Leuck and sophomore Rachel Meachem impressed as each surpassed 20 assists at 26 and 24, respectively. Libero Grace Kucharski was everywhere defensively as she picked up a match-high 30 digs.

The decisive fifth set would be a see-saw affair that saw WNE lead 8-7 at the switch. The Golden Bears then rode their strong serving to take a five-point set win. Kendra Ouimette and Leuck had service aces down the stretch, and Cameron, Armstrong and Frank had back-to-back-to-back kills to clinch the match.

The first set saw the Golden Bears come out with an offensive attack that was nearly unstoppable. The team collectively hit at a .567 clip, including a stat line of 18-1-30 in the set. That attack was led by Cameron and Armstrong, who each recorded four kills with no errors, while Frank and Carolyn Hajdusek each chipped in with three kills without errors. The four players combined to go 14-0-22 in the opening frame. Western New England won the opening frame by six points.

Endicott rallied together and stormed back to take the second set by five points after falling behind early, 3-1. VandeMerkt picked up eight of her 18 digs in the set. Endicott out-hit WNE .122 to .049 in the stanza.

The third set proved to be the closest as WNE edged Endicott by two points. Both offenses struggled to get anything going as the Golden Bears hit minus-.040 compared to just minus-.077 for the Gulls. Western New England's defense was pivotal in taking a two-sets-to-one lead as it tallied 33 digs in the third.

Endicott forced a winner-take-all fifth set with a commanding 25-15 score in the fourth. The Gulls outhit the Golden Bears .406 to .105 in the as Dolan, Guerre and Tori McIntyre combined to go 12-0-25, with Guerre leading the way with six of the kills. The Gulls also picked up 19 digs and three blocks in the frame.

Against the WPI Engineers, Cameron again led the way with match bests of 10 kills and .304 hitting.

Holly Ganser and Maddy Werth had six and five kills, respectively, for a WPI offense that attacked for only a .044 percentage. Caroline Meyer led all players with 20 assists.

Western New England had another strong serve-receive outing as the Golden Bears produced 17 aces, led by freshman Jessica Sincero with five and Cameron with four. Sincero also recorded nine assists to lead the team.

Kucharski added another 17 digs to top all players and increased her CCC-leading total to 443.

There were seven ties and five lead changes in the first set, but WNE never trailed in the second and third.

Western New England returns to the court on Tuesday versus Salve Regina on the road in an important CCC match.
