Golden Bears Stampede Past Bison, 62-37, in NEFC Season Finale on the Road

Box Score DUDLEY, Mass.--Visiting Western New England sent the senior class out on a winning note on Saturday with a resounding 62-37 victory at Nichols in New England Football Conference action at Vendetti Field, closing the 2013 season with a 4-6 record (3-4 in the NEFC). The Bison finish up at 1-8 overall and 0-7.

Western New England displayed a balance offense with 330 yards on the ground and another 324 through the air for 654 total yards. Junior Kevin Cook ran for a career-high 189 yards to lead all players and senior quarterback John Krafick led the aerial attack on 22 completions in 27 attempts, as the duo accounted for six touchdowns combined.

Krafick tossed for three scores to junior Tucker Schumitz of 5, 15 and 11 yards. Classmate Andrew Walz hauled in four receptions for a game-high 110 yards. Western New England piled up 654 yards of total offense.

Cook finished the season with a career-high 1,282 yards rushing for second in the NEFC, and will enter his senior year with 2,862 for his career needing 540 to become the school's all-time leader in that category.

Sophomore Quillian Respass rushed for 103 yards and a pair of touchdowns for the Bison, who had 435 yards of total offense.

Nichols junior Kris Williams had a pair of 85-yard kickoff returns in the first quarter - one of which went for a touchdown - as part of a school-record 310 return yards on the afternoon that broke the previous single-game record of 255, which was set by Lawrence Scott against Curry on Nov. 1, 2008.

The WNE defense made sophomore Tyrell Todd's first start at quarterback a challenge by intercepting him three times and limiting the Bison 102 yards through the air. Senior Brandon Ormsby (8 tackles, 6 solo, 1 INT) and sophomore Dean Soucie (8 tackles, 6 solo) led the Golden Bears defensively, while junior Ryan Nolte had seven stops (6 solo, 1 sack) and an interception. Freshman Obi Etuka (3 tackles) had the other pick.

A pair of field goals from freshman Kevin Patterson and two touchdown runs from Cook gave the Golden Bears a 20-10 lead after one quarter. Andre Rickerson's two-yard scoring run in the second was sandwiched around two Schumitz touchdown receptions - one from 15 yards out and another from five - and gave WNE a 34-16 halftime lead.

Senior Mario Pires recovered a fumble early in the third quarter for the Bison, and on the next play, Todd hooked up with Xavier Livingston for a 27-yard touchdown to bring them to within 11 points at 34-23. But the Golden Bears answered with a seven-play, 91-yard drive that was capped by freshman Nick Connell 's three-yard touchdown run that pushed the lead to 41-23. Following Schumitz's third touchdown of the afternoon - an 11-yard hookup with Krafick - Cook closed the third-quarter scoring with a 53-yard touchdown to extend the Golden Bears lead to a commanding 55-23.

Respass scored a pair of rushing touchdowns in the fourth - one from five yards out and another from four - while Krafick's nine-yard run accounted for the Golden Bears' points in the final stanza.

Williams led the Nichols defense with 13 tackles, including eight solo, while senior A.J. Farina tallied 11 (7 solo) and one sack in his final game in Dudley. Pires, meanwhile, finished with 10 and one pass breakup.

Thirteen seniors--including defensive back Ryan Connolly; linebackers Ryan Critelli and Oliver Gregan; offensive linemen Jake Butler, DJ Eberle, Gary Leroux II, Mike Primmer, and Tyler Underwood; Krafick; split end  Dan LaNoir; strong safety Ormsby, and defensive linemen Scott Maille and Kevin Soule--donned WNE royal blue and gold uniforms for the last time at Nichols. Coach Keith Emery said: "They have had a great run here over the last four years. We pulled together to put an exclamation point on their careers here."

Western New England has won eight of the last nine meetings with the Bison under Coach Emery to take a 15-14 lead in the all-time series.
