BRISTOL, R.I.--The Western New England University women's basketball team's season-long six-game winning streak came to an end on the road Tuesday as host Roger Williams dealt the Golden Bears a 66-45 loss at the Campus Rec Center. Western New England falls to 14-9 overall and 11-5 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference, while the Hawks up their record to 17-7 (13-4 CCC).
Freshman
Chelsea Vujs led the Golden Bears with 16 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots, and senior tri-captain
Emily Savino contributed 12 points.
Roger Williams received balanced scoring among its five starters as Elizabeth Kilzi led four in double-digits with 18 points, followed by Kaitlyn Bovee with 15
, Angelica Ariola had 13, and Alexandria Lanieri produced 10 points by making all five of her field goals. Lanieri also hauled down 10 rebounds to complete a double-double.
Savino gave WNE its largest lead at 12-9 with a 3-pointer from the right wing at the 14:48 mark of the first half, completing a 6-0 run in which Vujs earned a traditional three-point play off a steal.
Roger Williams then called a 30-second timeout and the Hawks responded with a 15-0 run over a span of 5 minutes and 54 seconds. The Hawks led 24-12 at that point, taking advantage of 10 consecutive missed shots by Western New England.
After a Savino lay-up, the Golden Bears suffered through another drought and RWU ended the half on a 12-3 run to go up 36-17 at the intermission.
Roger Williams scored the opening points of the second half to maintain a 20-point-plus lead for the remainder of the game.
Western New England made just 28.8 percent (17-of-59) of its field goal attempts on the night compared to 46.2 percent by RWU.
Both teams committed 14 turnovers.
