Box Score
SPRINGFIELD, Mass.-- Tri-captain
Emily Savino scored 20 points on Senior Day on Saturday, but it wasn't enough to overcome a big second-half run by the University of New England as the Western New England women's basketball team fell, 60-49, in CCC action at the Alumni Healthful Living Center field house.
The Nor'easters, who came into the game ranked 10th in the NCAA Division III Northeast Region, finished the regular season with an unblemished 18-0 Commonwealth Coast Conference record, and an overall record of 21-4. The Golden Bears, who will host a game in the CCC Championship Tournament next week, end the regular season at 12-6 in conference play and 15-10 overall.
Western New England went ahead 32-31 with 14 minutes and 10 seconds left in the second half when freshman forward
Chelsea Vujs converted a traditional three-point play, but the Nor'easters would respond with a 19-9 run over the next 10 minutes that the Golden Bears could not recover from. Vujs finished with 11 points, three assists and a game-high 11 rebounds in the loss.
The first half was an offensive struggle for both sides, as the visiting Nor'easters shot 32.1 percent from the floor while Western New England was able to make only 20 percent (5-25) of its shots. The Golden Bears, however, trailed by just four at the half thanks to their defensive tenacity and several hustle plays. Savino recorded four steals and one block in the opening frame.
Western New England was able to tie the game at 26 three minutes into the second half and take the lead on its next possession, but UNE found a way to match every big play the Golden Bears made. Forward Beth Suggs had a monster game for the Nor'easters, finishing with a game-high 27 points and 10 rebounds. Kelly Coleman, the other member of the UNE starting frontcourt, chipped in with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Although this was the last regular season home game for seniors Savino, forward
Dayshima Jackson (1 rebound), center
Elena Radzikowski (2 points, 4 rebounds, 1 block) and guard
Shelby Van Huysen (3 points, 5 rebounds), the group will get another chance to play in front of their fans in the CCC Quarterfinals next week.
