Box Score
SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Freshman
Taylor Scialdone notched career highs of six goals and nine points, while sophomores
Kaitlynn Stevens and
Jessica Scannapieco each netted a hat trick, to power Western New England to a 19-18 victory Saturday against Univ. of New England in a key Commonwealth Coast Conference game at Golden Bear Stadium. With their third consecutive CCC victory, the Golden Bears (9-4 overall) take over sole possession of second place in the league standings at 4-1. The Nor'easters fall to 5-7 on the season and 3-2 in the conference.
Gina Newsome paced UNE with four goals and seven points while Hannah Tavella scored five times and Nikki Smith also notched a hat trick. Rachel Schwaner added three points and won four draw controls.
Western New England jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead as junior
Kelsey Sherman (3 goals, 2 assists) keyed the run.
After Scialdone potted the Golden Bears' fifth goal at the 25:36 mark, UNE called timeout. The Nor'easters responded by going on a 7-1 run in a 10-minute span to take a 7-6 lead with 15:30 to go in the first half. Tavella scored three goals to spark the comeback.
The Golden Bears, in turn, regrouped and ended the half by scoring seven of the next 10 goals to go up 13 to 10 at the intermission.
Western New England built another five-goal lead at 16-11 but didn't give up the lead this time. Tavella eventually tied it 17-all with 7 minutes and 36 second left in the game.
Stevens scored her team-leading 43rd goal of the season, on a man-up situation, to put WNE ahead to stay at 5:49 and Scialdone recorded her 38th for an insurance tally 52 seconds later.
Hannah Warren scored at 1:10 on the clock to bring UNE within 19-18. Then with less than 30 seconds left, the Nor'easters had a goal disallowed because of a crease violation that would have tied the game and forced overtime.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Emily Castleman, who had 10 saves in the game, made one of her best stops denying Tavella on a free-position attempt that would have given UNE an 8-6 lead but instead led to the Golden Bears' seventh goal off the stick of Scialdone. Western New England never trailed after that sequence of end-to-end action.
