MILTON, Mass.—Western New England used solid pitching to sweep a Commonwealth Coast Conference softball doubleheader from host Curry, edging the Colonels 3-2 in 11 innings in the first game and then earning a 2-0 shutout in the second. The Golden Bears improve to 23-14 on the season, including 13-3 in the CCC, while Curry slips to 20-16 and 7-9 in the conference.
In the opener, Western New England took a 3-1 lead in the top of the 11th inning by playing small ball as junior
Maria Francese batted in a run on a fielder's choice to third base and later scored on a squeeze bunt by sophomore
Samantha Mulhern.
Curry threatened in the bottom of the 11th, closing to within a run after a base hit by Paige Smigiel brought home junior Taryn Vigeant.
Freshman
Heidi Grieger (3-4) earned the win in relief by going the last four innings, allowing four hits and an earned run. Taylor Ahearn (8-7) was the hard-luck loser, hurling all 11 innings, surrendering 10 hits, two walks and one earned run while striking out 10.
Francese went 4-for-5 to lead WNE's 10-hit attack, and sophomore
Hannah Hill added three, including a double.
Curry rapped 13 hits--all singles--as a team, led by Smigiel with three. Four other Colonels had at least two.
Sophomore pitcher
Lauren Zambrano threw a perfect game with seven strikeouts in the nightcap, and helped her own cause by driving in WNE's first run with a double in the third inning. Zambrano, who threw her first no-hitter back on April 7 at Wentworth, joins Grieger as Golden Bears to pitch perfect games this season.
Senior outfielder
Laura Madaio batted in the team's second run in the same frame, bringing home Zambrano who had reached third base on a wild pitch.
Mulhern and senior co-captain
Jeana Longo had WNE's other two hits.
