Megan Doyle Leads Balanced Offense in a 20-17 CCC Victory at Curry

Box Score MILTON, Mass.--Graduate student Megan Doyle led all scorers with seven goals and eight points as Western New England turned back host Curry, 20-17, in a Commonwealth Coast Conference women's lacrosse contest at Walter M. Katz Field on Saturday. The Golden Bears up their season record to 12-4 and 6-1 in the CCC, while the Colonels fall to 12-4 on the year and 4-3 in the conference.

Doyle's best offensive day of 2013 also included five draw controls and three caused turnovers. Sophomores Jessica Scannapieco (2 goals, 4 assists, 8 draw controls, 5 caused turnovers, 3 ground balls) and Kaitlynn Stevens (2 goals, 2 assists, 4 draw controls, 3 caused turnovers) also had strong performances, and freshmen Brooke Kumnick and Taylor Scialdone netted four and three goals, respectively.

Haley Carey led Curry with six goals and five draw controls, and Ana Bottary had four goals and seven points.

After spotting Curry a 2-1 lead after the opening 3 minutes and 57 seconds, Western New England reeled off six goals--including three by Doyle--in a 6:15 span to go up 7-2 with 18:51 left in the first half. The Golden Bears wouldn't trail again after that.

Carey scored four times to help the Colonels eventually pull within 12-11 at the intermission.

After the teams traded the next four goals to start the second half, Western New England had another stretch of six unanswered goals to turn a 14-13 lead into a 20-13 cushion with 9:15 remaining.

The Colonels scored the game's last four goals--two on the man-up--but Western New England held them at bay.

Western New England forced Curry into 21 turnovers to offset being outshot by a 44 to 35 margin.

Sophomore goalie Melissa Perry earned the win in relief, making nine saves over the last 45:34.
