Western New England Splits in Second Round of CCC Softball Championship Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BRISTOL, R.I.--Western New England started the second round of the 2013 Commonwealth Coast Conference Softball Championship with a 3-1 win against sixth-seeded Curry on Monday, but now the Golden Bears must win out to stay alive in the double-elimination tournament after absorbing a 6-1 defeat at the hands of No. 2 seed and host Roger Williams. The No. 3-seed Golden Bears are now 24-17 on the season.

In the two-run win against the Colonels (23-17), junior Katie Eckert went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in to lead the WNE offense.

All of the game's runs were scored in the fourth inning. In the top half, Curry took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run on a fielding error. But in the bottom half, sophomore Grace Kucharski had a RBI single to tie it and two batters later Eckert hit a single off the shortstop's glove to plate two runs.

Sophomore Lauren Zambrano was terrific in the circle for the Golden Bears, pitching a complete game with a career-high 13 strikeouts against just three hits and two walks.

Against the Hawks, Kucharski went 2-for-3, including a double, and a run scored and senior co-captain Jeana Longo had a RBI single in the fifth.

RWU, which opened the contest with a 2-0 advantage, accounted for the final margin on a three-run home run to left field in the fifth.

The Hawks (21-18) outhit the Golden Bears 13 to 5.

Western New England returns to action on Thursday in an elimination game against #4 University of New England at 2:30 p.m. on Endicott's campus in Beverly, Mass. If the Golden Bears win, they will face the winner of #5 Salve Regina/#6 Curry in another loser-out contest later in the day.
