Golden Bears Capture Wheaton College Invitational with Three Victories

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 NORTON, Mass.--The Western New England University women's volleyball program started 2013 the way it ended last season...with a championship!

The Golden Bears defeated Southern Vermont, Simmons and host Wheaton on Saturday to take home the Wheaton College Lyons Invitational at Emerson Gymnasium, finishing their opening weekend with a 3-0 record.

A year ago, Western New England won its first-ever postseason title with the 2012 Eastern College Athletic Conference New England crown with several members of the current squad.

Western New England 3, Southern Vermont 0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-23) /
Kelsey Armstrong and Maureen Pollet led the WNE offense with eight and seven kills, respectively, to help the Golden Bears avenge a 3-0 loss on the Mountaineers homecourt last season. Pollet also had a team-high .286 attack percentage, and Armstrong chipped in 13 digs.

Libero Grace Kucharski posted 18 digs in the winning effort.

Western New England 3, Simmons 0 (25-16, 25-17, 26-24) /
Kasey Cameron led all players with all players with 11 kills to go along with a .286 attack percentage, seven digs and three blocks.

Pollet had another strong match for WNE to complement Cameron with .462 hitting on six kills in 13 attempts with no hitting errors.

Kucharski paced a strong defensive effort for the Golden Bears, who held the Sharks to minus-.074 hitting. She had a match-best 14 digs, while Devyn Frank had six blocks to help WNE (16 block assists) earn eight total team blocks.

Freshman setter Jessica Sincero recorded a career-high 20 assists as part of a stat line that included three kills, six digs and two blocks.

Western New England 3, Wheaton 1 (25-16, 26-24, 19-25, 25-13) /
Defense again paved the way for the Golden Bears against the Lyons, holding the hosts to .086 hitting.

Frank led all attackers with 11 kills (.647), followed by Cameron with nine (.350), Pollet had eight (.412) and Tyler Singh, Carolyn Hajdusek with six apiece. Western New England hit .314 as a team, committing just 14 errors in 102 attempts. Setters Rachel Meachem and Sincero (10 digs) picked apart the WC defense with 16 assists apiece.

Kucharski notched 17 digs for a total of 49.

Cameron was selected the tournament's most outstanding player and Pollet joined her teammate on the all-Invitational Team.
