WORCESTER, Mass.--The Western New England University women's volleyball team used a balanced attack and solid defense to build a 25-16, 25-10, 25-14 non-conference victory Tuesday over the WPI Engineers at the Harrington Auditorium, keeping the visiting Golden Bears unbeaten at 8-0 to start the season. WPI, meanwhile, falls to 5-3.

Kelsey Armstrong (.312) each had seven kills to lead the WNE offense, which hit .239 as a team.ÂÂ

Rachel Meachem piloted the offense with a match-high 12 assists.
Cassandra Tomerlin paced WPI with five kills and six digs, and Sarah Cook had a match-tying eight digs.

Grace Kucharski led WNE's defensive effort with eight digs. As a team, the Golden Bears got to 39 digs compared to 27 for WPI. The Engineers (minus-.074) were the third-consecutive opponent held to a .000 attack percentage or less.
Western New England also took advantage of 11 WPI service errors.
WPI led only once in the entire match on a Maddy Werth service ace to make it 6-5 in the first set, but the Golden Bears won 20 of the next 30 points to go up 1-0 in sets.
After winning easily in the middle stanza by 15, Western New England raced to a 7-0 lead in the third set and never looked back. Armstrong had two aces while Cameron and Frank had two kills apiece to account for the Golden Bears' hot start.ÂÂ
Tonight's match was a meeting of former Springfield College men's volleyball teammates between WNE third-year coach Bret Stothart and Greg Poole who is in his first season at WPI.
