Box Score CHICOPEE, Mass.--It took a 32-minute lightning delay and then a waiting period of 20 hours, but the Western New England University field hockey team picked up its first win of the season with a 2-1 victory at Elms College on Friday in the completion of a suspended non-conference game. The Golden Bears (1-2 overall) and Blazers (0-4) started their contest Thursday night, but inclement weather in the area forced officials to postpone the resumption of play until this afternoon.
Junior
Jessica Scannapieco, a newcomer to college field hockey after two highly-successful seasons for the WNE women's lacrosse program, netted the game-winner following a penalty corner with 1 minute and 1 second remaining in regulation. It marked her team-leading third goal and seventh point for the Golden Bears.
Tori Cirocco put the visiting Golden Bears up 1-0 with her first career goal in the 34th minute.
Sabrina Lyesiuk was credited with the assist for her first career point.
But the Blazers tied the game in the 56th minute when Kristina Kopyscinski scored on a deflection from Brianna Lyons and Jaclyn Soderquist started the play with a penalty corner. Kopyscinski led the EC offense with five shots and three shots on goal.
Western New England peppered Elms by a 25-9 shots advantage, but Blazers goalie Samantha Alvino made 17 saves--nine of which that came in the first half while facing 13 shots to hold the Golden Bears to just one goal.
Freshman keeper
Emily Arnold had six stops in the WNE cage.
Western New England returns to action at 1 p.m. Saturday with a non-conference date at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley.
