NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Western New England University women's volleyball program set a team record for the fastest start to a season on Saturday after defeating host Smith College
25-16, 25-19, 20-25, 25-17 and then sweeping Castleton State 25-5, 25-15, 25-13, moving to 10-0 overall.
"Western New England has had some tremendous teams in the past, so to set a school record for the best start in team history is very exciting," third-year head coach Bret Stothart said. "The foundation that our Alumnae built has only helped us continue the program's tradition of success."
Western New England opened the day versus the Pioneers, who lost for the first time in six starts, by getting twice as many kills (50-23) as the hosts.
Kasey Cameron led the WNE offense with a match-high 14 kills, and freshmen
Jenna Leuck (4 service aces) and
Jessica Sincero (7 kills) added 23 and 21 assists, respectively.
Mei-Li Smith, Rosa Drummond and Paige Sarlandt paced the Pioneers with seven kills apiece.
Defensively,
Grace Kucharski led WNE with 24 digs and Cameron had 20 as four Golden Bears reached double figures in the category. Smith's Julie Voorhes led all players with 25.
In the Castleton (2-4) match,
Kelsey Armstrong paved the way for the WNE offense with a match-best 10 kills.
The Golden Bears had more service aces (18, a season-high) than the Spartans had kills (10), led by
Maureen Pollet who had five aces to go along with seven kills and a .375 hitting percentage.
