Golden Bears Strike First but Settle for 1-1 CCC Draw at University of New England

Box Score BIDDEFORD, Maine--Junior Bonnie Bousquet recorded her second goal of the season as Western New England tied the University of New England, 1-1, in Commonwealth Coast Conference women's soccer action at Barbara J. Hazard Field on Saturday. Both teams now sport 4-3-1 overall records while the visiting Golden Bears are 0-1-1 in the CCC and the Nor'easters are 1-0-1.

Western New England struck first on Bousquet's second-half header just under the crossbar in the 61st minute when freshman Katelyn Cummings sent a cross off a free kick into the box for the open goal-scorer. Cummings registered her first career collegiate point on the set play.

Despite getting heavily outshot by a 3-to-1 ratio, Western New England kept UNE off the scoreboard until the last minute of regulation when Jayne Kelly notched her second goal, unassisted, forcing overtime. She collected a loose ball and drove a high shot from just outside the box into the upper right-hand corner of the net.

Sophomore keeper Briana Kubik made eight saves while facing 22 Nor'easters shots (10 on target) to keep WNE in the game. Kubik stopped four shots in the two 10-minute overtime sessions to preserve the tie.

Western New England had the first chance to end the contest in a sudden-victory situation, but Tayler Mazurski's shot went high in the 97th minute. The junior had two of the Golden Bears' six shots (three on goal) on the day.

Then UNE junior Margaret Palmer punched a shot over the crossbar with just over 4 minutes remaining in the second extra frame.

Katy Marshall and Palmer led UNE with four shots apiece.

Another way the Nor'easters kept applying offensive pressure was by having a decided 8-2 corner kicks advantage over WNE.

Both teams play non-conference matches Tuesday. The Golden Bears make the short trip to Elms for a 4 p.m. game. UNE hosts Bowdoin at 6:30 p.m.
