Records Aplenty as Western New England Celebrates 59-0 Homecoming Victory

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Western New England University set four known team records on Saturday en route to a 59-0 victory over Maine Maritime Academy in the New England Football Conference opener for both squads. The Golden Bears improve to 1-2 overall while the visiting Mariners drop to 0-3.

Western New England thrilled the Homecoming crowd of nearly 2,000 spectators by setting records for margin of victory (old: 42 points over Plymouth State, 49-7, 2011), 740 total yards (old: 686 vs. Maine Maritime, 2010), 580 yards rushing (old: 543 vs. Framingham State, 2011) and 73 rushing attempts (old: 65 vs. Western Connecticut, 1981). The Golden Bears also recorded 33 first downs, which is believed to be another school benchmark.

Freshman Terrence N`Dabian rushed for a career-high 152 yards on just six carries and touchdowns runs of 50 and 68 yards, while Kevin Cook added 122 yards along with three scores of 1, 28 and 1.

While the offense was putting up eye-popping numbers, the Golden Bears defense was just as impressive in shutting down the nation's top rushing attack. Western New England "held" Maine Maritime to 174 yards, which was well-below its NCAA Division III-leading 469.6 average in the previous two games. Senior co-captain Kevin Soule, who had been out the last two weeks due to injury, returned in a big way with eight total tackles, including a pair of sacks for loss of nine yards. Junior Walter Lewis led WNE with 10 tackles and sophomore Nathan Fleming added eight.

Billy Wetherbee tried to get Maine Maritime going with 68 yards rushing, but the NEFC's leading rusher who is also among the best in Division III was held 111 yards below his average. Ryan O'Neal added 61 yards on eight carries.

Cook helped give WNE a 7-0 lead with a 1-yard plunge into the end zone with 4 minutes and 3 seconds remaining in the first quarter, capping a 16-play, 71-yard drive that took 4:43 off the clock. The Golden Bears were never seriously threatened after that.

The Western New England offense has put together several long scoring drives so far this season, but the Golden Bears can also strike quickly. N'Dabian rushed for his first career offensive TD on the team's first play of the second quarter--a 50-yard sprint on his first touch of the ball against the Mariners. On his team's next possession, senior co-captain John Krafick found Andrew Walz for a 35-yard TD pass on just one play as WNE increased its lead to 21-0 in a span of just 2:38. Cook and Michael Ozzella also rushed for TDs of 28 and 22 yards, respectively, on scoring drives that both took no more than four plays. And to finish off the scoring, N'Dabian ran 68 yards as part of a two-play, 71-yard "drive" in only 29 seconds.

Perhaps the most exciting play on a day of many entertaining ones occurred midway through the third quarter on WNE's seventh TD. With the Golden Bears at the MMA 18, Tucker Schumitz went off right tackle and when his path was defended, reversed course to the 40-yard line and horseshoed around to the left side of the field en route to the score. He covered about "60 yards" to earn his second TD of the season that was officially 18 yards.

Thomas Kinton led the Mariners with a game-high 18 tackles and nine solo.

Maine Maritime owned the time of possession, 33:44 to 26:16, but was limited to just nine first downs.
