Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Despite getting a double-double in the first half alone from
Chelsea Vujs, the Western New England women's basketball team couldn't keep the momentum of a 10-point lead into the second half during Wednesday's 51-46 loss at the hands of visiting Wentworth in a Commonwealth Coast Conference affair at the Alumni Healthful Living Center. The Golden Bears had their three-game home winning streak snapped to fall to 6-7 overall and 3-4 in the CCC, while the Leopards now sit at 5-8 on the season and 2-5 in the conference.
Kendra Kerr led Wentworth with a double-double of her own with 13 points and 10 rebounds to go along with five assists and three steals. Christine Henry came off the bench to net 13 points and Megan McLaughlin had 11.
Vujs finished with game highs of 18 points and 14 rebounds.
Western New England never trailed in the first half, taking an eight-point lead, 26-18, into the locker room. After Wentworth tied the score 14-14 on Henry's 3-pointer, WNE finished the final 7 minutes and 29 seconds on a 12-4 run which was ignited by a
Samantha McCann (8 points) lay-in and Vujs keyed it with seven points.
Wentworth scored 15 points on 19 WNE turnovers, while the Golden Bears scored nine on 19.
After a bucket by
Nicole Daly in the paint gave WNE a 30-22 cushion at 16:12 to go in the second half, a Henry trey and McLaughlin lay-in cut into the lead to 30-27.
The teams traded points until Wentworth took its first lead, 36-34, on a Kerr lay-up at the 9:54 mark. A few possessions later, freshman
Sammie Olson (5 points) reclaimed the lead for WNE, 39-38, on a turnaround jumper.
On Wentworth's ensuing possession the other way, Ashley Stowe (4 points, 11 rebounds) gave the Leopards the lead for good 40-39 with 5:41 left after an offensive rebound.
Western New England returns to the hardwood on Saturday when it travels to Beverly for a CCC match-up versus Endicott.
