Kelsey Armstrong's Season-Best 14 Kills Powers Golden Bears' Sweep of the ENC Lions

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Junior Kelsey Armstrong put-down a season-high 14 kills on a .333 attack percentage, and freshman Carly Skibinski added totals of nine and .643 hitting, to power Western New England to a 25-16, 25-13, 25-8 victory over visiting Eastern Nazarene in Commonwealth Coast Conference women's volleyball action at the Alumni Healthful Living Center on Tuesday. The Golden Bears won for the third time in four outings to improve to 16-7 on the season and tied Roger Williams atop the CCC standings with a 4-0 conference slate. The Lions, meanwhile, fall to 2-19 overall and 0-4 in the conference.

Kayla Dean led Eastern Nazarene with five kills, Lauryl Berger had 10 assists and Oksana DiCamillo posted 12 digs.

Western New England excelled in all facets of the game, outhitting the Lions .274 to minus-.036. The Golden Bears had more service aces (12) than Eastern Nazarene had kills (10). The WNE defense also had a big advantages in digs (55-35) and team blocks (5-1).

Also for the Golden Bears, senior Kendra Ouimette added a match-best 14 digs and sophomore setter Jenna Leuck had 10 digs to go along with 12 assists. Sophomore setter Jessica Sincero dished 17 assists and three service aces, while junior Olivia Lathrop recorded six kills (.429), six digs, three total blocks and two aces.

Armstrong started the match with a kill down the middle of the court. Eastern Nazarene took a 2-1 lead after a WNE service error and a kill by Dean. The Golden Bears would eventually take a 17-9 in the first set before the Lions scored the next four points on WNE attack errors to pull within 17-13, forcing the hosts to call a timeout. Coach Bret Stothart calmed his team down and WNE responded with an 8-3 run to finish the opening stanza.

Eastern Nazarene jumped to a 2-0 in the second set on a WNE attack error and service ace from Kortney Jenkins. But Armstrong keyed a four-point run by the Golden Bears with a pair of kills for a 4-2 advantage. Western New England quickly increased the lead to 10-4 and cruised from there.

The Golden Bears led wire-to-wire in the final set, winning the last eight points. Sincero had three aces in her last seven serves to end the match that took a tidy 55 minutes to complete.

Western New England steps out of conference play this weekend with the MIT Invitational in Cambridge, where they will play Colby College on Friday (6 p.m.) and Oneonta State (10:30 a.m.) and the host Engineers (1 p.m.) on Saturday.
