Western New England Starts Fast at 1st-Place Endicott Behind Brittany DeLima Tally

Box Score BEVERLY, Mass.--The visiting Western New England University field hockey team jumped on Commonwealth Coast Conference co-leader Endicott College, but the Gulls regrouped to spin an early deficit into a 6-1 victory on Saturday at EC North Field. The Golden Bears fall to 4-10 overall and 1-7 in the conference, while the Gulls improve to 13-2 on the season and 7-1 in the CCC.

Emily Sawchuck scored two goals and had an assist to pace the Gulls, who outshot Western New England 26-9. Mackenzie Hurst and Olivia Larson both came off the bench to add a goal and an assist each, while starter Amanda Glynn also contributed three points.

Things started well enough for WNE which grabbed a 1-0 advantage in the 15th minute on freshman Brittany DeLima's seventh goal on an assist by classmate Allison Jackson. Jackson picked up the rebound of senior co-captain Megan French's shot that was saved by Endicott keeper Francheska Ventura, and passed to DeLima for her team-leading seventh tally of 2014. DeLima also tops the Golden Bears in scoring with 17 points, including three assists.

Larson tipped in an Elizabeth LeClair shot-pass to put the Gulls on the scoreboard in the 22nd minute. Then 3 minutes and 15 seconds later, Ashleigh Allen put EC ahead for good on a penalty stroke goal, 2-1. In the closing minutes of the first half, Sawchuck and Glynn scored 1:13 apart for a comfortable 4-1 lead at the intermission.

Freshman Grace Trupe had a career-best 11 saves in 60:36 in the WNE cage and classmate Renee Rossignol did not face a shot for the final 9:24. Ventura ended up with six stops for the Gulls.

DeLima, French and Jackson had two shots on goal apiece. Junior Kaitlyn Labbe chipped in two defensive saves for the Golden Bears.

Western New England hits the field again on Tuesday when the Golden Bears travel to Bristol, R.I., to meet Roger Williams University in another CCC tilt.
