Freshman Michelle Carlson Leads Furious Comeback Win at CCC Foe Roger Williams, 3-2

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I.--Freshman Michelle Carlson scored two goals, including the game-winner in the 58th minute, as Western New England rallied from a two-goal deficit to trip up host Roger Williams, 3-2, in Commonwealth Coast Conference field hockey action on Tuesday. The Golden Bears (5-10 overall, 2-7 CCC) snapped a two-game losing streak and avenged a 3-1 loss to the Hawks on Sep. 23 in Springfield. The host Hawks fall to 7-10 on the season and 3-7 in the conference, suffering a crucial blow to their CCC Tournament hopes because they are 1-1/2 games behind Salve Regina for the final playoff spot with two games left.

Western New England would take the lead for good with 12 minutes and 32 seconds left, with sophomore Hillary Naranjo-Mejia finding Carlson on back side of the goal for her seventh goal of the season to tie classmate Brittany DeLima for the team lead.

The Hawks tried to make one last push over the final 10 minutes of the game, but the Golden Bears were able to hold on for the win.

Western New England, who remained active on the offensive end throughout the first half despite trailing 2-0, managed to come through in the 29th minute. Freshman Allison Jackson took a shot from inside the middle to the left side of the goal. Naranjo-Meija got a stick on the ball mid-flight and redirected Jackson's shot into the back of the cage for her second score of the year, bringing WNE within one.

The Golden Bears came all the way back early in the second half, tying the game less than five minutes into the period. Senior co-captain Megan French sent a pass through the Hawk defense to the back of the goal, finding Carlson for her first tally of the afternoon.

Freshman Grace Trupe came on in relief of classmate Renee Rossignol (7 saves), making two saves in the final 29:30 of the game to earn her second win of the season. Meghan Augur set a new career high with 13 stops in the loss.

The Hawks struck first in the 10th minute. Abby Treweek took a penalty corner and passed to Alexandra Baxter at the top of the arc. Treweek slipped to the left side of the goal and tapped in a pass from Baxter to put the Hawks up 1-0.

Roger Williams added another goal in the 24th minute. Meghan Curran passed across the back side of the scoring area to Juliana Miccile on the left side of the goal. Miccile's first shot was denied by Rossignol, but Miccile would connect on the follow-up shot to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead.

Shots were 19 apiece for the teams and the Golden Bears had a 10-9 edge in penalty corners. Western New England outshot RWU in the key second half, 13-8.

Western New England welcomes nationally-ranked Mount Holyoke for a non-conference contest on Saturday (1 p.m.) at Golden Bear Stadium.
