Christina Delude, Tayler Mazurski Score while Defense Stifles Nichols in CCC Action

Box Score DUDLEY, Mass.--Freshman Christina Delude scored her first collegiate goal and junior keeper Briana Kubik notched her career-best seventh shutout of the season as the visiting Western New England University women's soccer team blanked Nichols College, 2-0, under rainy and blustery conditions at Vendetti Field on Wednesday. The Golden Bears improve to 6-8-3 overall and 3-3-1 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference, while the Bison fall to 7-9 and 2-5.

Senior Tayler Mazurski gave Western New England some insurance with a penalty kick goal in the 28th minute, extending her team leading totals of five goals and 14 points. She capitalized on the spot-kick after a handball from the Bison in the box.

The Golden Bears struck for their first goal in the 16th minute when senior goaltender Sarah Whitestone bobbled a cross from the right side of the field and Delude took advantage to drive the ball into the empty net. The goal marked her first two career points in royal blue and gold uniform.

Despite trailing the Golden Bears on the scoreboard, the Bison finished the first half tied at three shots apiece while also taking three corner kicks compared to none for WNE.

Caitlin Ansart nearly put the home team up 1-0 in the 11th minute when her shot clanked off the crossbar after a corner kick and then the Golden Bears' defense cleared the ball out of danger. The best opportunity for Nichols in the second half occurred in the 59th minute as freshman Taylor Daniels broke away from the defense and fired a shot near post that Kubik was able to make a tremendous diving save to preserve the shutout.

Daniels led all Bison with three shots among the team's eight shots for the game. The Golden Bears finished with nine shots as Mazurski led the team with three.

Kubik made three saves to push her CCC-leading total to 110 while ranking second in the conference with seven clean sheets. Whitestone falls to 3-1 on the season after stopping four shots.

The Golden Bears return to the field on Saturday when they host Curry College on Senior Day at Suprenant Field; kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. The Bison travel to take on Eastern Nazarene on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
