Golden Bears Commandeer Curry College Colonels in Sweep Behind Efficient Offense

Box Score MILTON, Mass.--The Western New England University women's volleyball team turned in its best offensive showing on the road on Wednesday evening with a 25-13, 25-11, 25-18 victory over Curry College in a Commonwealth Coast Conference match at the CC Student Center. The visiting Golden Bears improve to 15-6 overall and 3-0 in the conference, while the Colonels fall to 6-15 on the season and 0-4 in the CCC.

Junior Olivia Lathrop was the only player in double digits with 11 kills and she hit .381 on 21 total attempts with only three attack errors to pace an efficient Western New England offense that hit for a .326 percentage as a team. Freshman Carly Skibinski added eight kills and .636 hitting while classmate Sam Heffer posted career highs of six and .417. Sophomore setters Jessica Sincero and Jenna Leuck had a sharp eye for finding the open hitters with 22 and 12 assists, respectively.

Curry was led by freshman Nicole Rice (.296) who had nine of the Colonels' 15 kills for the entire match. Sophomore Makayla Hughes chipped in 12 assists. Freshman Courtney Carroll added two service aces and six digs.

Western New England hit for a blistering .577 percentage, making 16 kills with just one error on 26 total attacks. The team's .326 attack percentage was a season's best for the road, eclipsing the .282 clip set at Keene State on Sep. 9.

Curry was only .167 for the opening set and the Colonels' offense couldn't get on track with a .000 for the final two sets. Senior libero Grace Kucharski was a big cog for the WNE defense with a match-best 20 digs while Sincero and Lathrop chipped in six apiece.

Western New England also had a solid serve-receive effort with 12 aces and only four reception errors. Senior Kendra Ouimette and Kucharski each had three aces.

The Golden Bears led virtually wire-to-wire in a match that featured just five ties. The only lead change came in the final stanza when WNE came back from a 3-1 deficit to go on a 6-point streak that was punctuated by a Heffer kill for a 7-3 cushion. Western New England eventually went up 13-5 before the Colonels scored the next five points on three WNE errors and two aces from Carroll to pull within 13-10. But the Golden Bears put the match away by scoring 12 of the last 20 points.

Western New England returns to the court on Friday (7 p.m.) when the Golden Bears will play at Amherst College out of the New England Small College Athletic Conference. Curry will travel to the University of New England on Tuesday for a CCC contest slated for a 7 p.m. start.
