Box Score
MILTON, Mass.--Rocco Laugelle caught a 13-yard pass from Mike O'Hearn in overtime to lift host Curry College to a 7-0 win over Western New England University in New England Football Conference action on Saturday at Walter M. Katz Field.
Western New England (6-2 overall, 3-2 NEFC) senior running backÂÂ
Kevin Cook led all players in all-purpose yards with 153 on 40 carries. Sophomore
Nick Connell added 62 rushing yards on 19 attempts.
Curry played two quarterbacks as O'Hearn went 10 for 24 with 102 yards and the game-winning TD pass, while starter Spencer Tyler was 9-for-19 and 66 yards. Both signal callers threw an interception. Sophomore Jake Cawlina had seven catches for 75 yards.
Hampered by a persistent, wind-swept rain, both offenses struggled in regulation. The two teams combined for eight punts and five turnovers in the first half alone. Curry had the first opportunity to put points on the board. A seven-play, 41-yard drive midway through the third quarter stalled at the Western New England six yard-line. But a 24-yard field goal attempt by freshman Eli Horne fell short, keeping the game scoreless with 5:34 left in the third.
ÂÂ
The Golden Bears' best shot at scoring in regulation came late in the fourth quarter. The visitors put together their longest drive of the day - 14-plays, 47-yards, and six minutes - to reach the Curry 10 yard-line with 2:50 remaining in the game. But sophomore kicker
Kevin Patterson was wide left with a 27-yard field goal try, preserving the scoreless deadlock and sending the contest into an extra frame.
ÂÂ
After neither team was able to score on its first possession of overtime, the Colonels advanced the ball from the WNE 25 to the 13 before O'Hearn connected with Laugelle at the three yard-line, and the rookie strode into the end zone with what proved to be the winning score.
ÂÂ
The Golden Bears were without the services of two starters--senior quarterback
Tyler Ward and
Andrew Walz--sidelined by injury.
On the final play of the game, the Golden Bears' offense had a chance for a game-tying touchdown but Cook fumbled near the Curry goal-line, and the Colonels recovered to preserve the win.
Both defenses produced a number of outstanding performances. Western New England was led by junior linebacker
Dean Soucie, who amassed a team-best 11 total tackles (10 solo for a career high). Junior defensive lineman
Steve Melino chipped in with six solo tackles, including three tackles for loss (-19 yards) and two sacks (-10 yards). Curry senior defensive lineman Parrish Rogers-Reed and junior defensive back Dylan Spence shared game-high tackling honors with 13 apiece. Freshman linebacker Devin Williams contributed nine total tackles (7 solo), a fumble recovery, two pass break-ups, and an interception with a 46-yard return.
The Western New England defense established season lows of 10 first downs, 50 rush yards and 218 total yards.
