Shooting Woes Stump Golden Bears at Curry in Commonwealth Coast Conference Opener

Box Score MILTON, Mass.--The Western New England University women's basketball team's five-game winning streak came to an end on Wednesday at the hands of host Curry College, 59-48, in the Commonwealth Coast Conference opener for both squads in the CC Student Center Gymnasium. The visiting Golden Bears now stand at 5-2 on the season while the Colonels are 3-2 overall.

Western New England was led by junior Chelsea Vujs who scored nine points and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.

Kylie Beltz and Kerry White paced Curry with 12 and 10 points, respectively, while Samantha Corcoran added nine points and 10 rebounds.

The Golden Bears were unable to get on track all night as Curry turned 24 WNE turnovers into 22 points. The Colonels also had 21 offensive rebounds to outscore WNE 15-6 on second-chance points.

Curry never trailed in opening the game with a 13-5 lead before sophomores Emily Anderson (6 points, 4 rebounds) and Sammie Battaini (5 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists) made a layup and three-pointer, respectively, on back-to-back possessions to cut WNE's deficit to 13-10 with 9 minutes and 15 seconds left in the first half.

But Curry began to seize control after WNE made just one field goal over a 4:02 span to go up 26-14 at the 2:57 mark on a Corcoran jump shot. The Colonels went into the intermission with a 30-21 advantage.

In the second half, WNE could not get closer than eight points as CC built as much as a 15-point cushion.

Western New England shot 29.4 percent (15-51) from the field while Curry was 31.7 (20-63). Both teams also struggled from three-point range (WNE 3-15, CC 3-14) and the free throw line (WNE 15-23, CC 16-26).

The Colonels enjoyed a slim 46-44 advantage on the glass. Shannon Griffith had nine rebounds and three other CC teammates had six apiece to complement Corcoron's 10. In addition to Vujs' 10, the Golden Bears also saw junior Amanda Lopez and sophomore Sammie Olson corral five each.

Western New England hits the court again on Saturday when it hosts 2014 CCC runner-up Roger Williams for a 1 p.m. tip-off at the Alumni Healthful Living Center field house.
