Golden Bears Battle Roger Williams to the End in 71-61 CCC Loss at Home

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Freshman Paige Young scored 10 points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds (10 offensive) for her first career double-double, and junior Samantha McCann led Western New England with 12 points, but it wasn't enough as a Golden Bears' strong effort came up a little short in a 71-61 loss against the Roger Williams Hawks on Saturday in a Commonwealth Coast Conference matchup at the Alumni Healthful Living Center field house.

Roger Williams (15-4 overall, 10-2 CCC) had three starters in double figures led by Ari Renwick who scored 19 points and added eight steals. Kaitlyn Bovee chipped in 17 points and Angelica Ariola 16 points and seven assists.

Western New England's (7-11, 4-8 CCC) strong rebounding on both sides of the floor offset its early shooting woes in the first half of play, when the Golden Bears were able to take a 7-4 lead with 14 minutes and 41 seconds remaining. The home team out-worked RWU on the glass for the game, 36-26, including a 22-9 margin on the offensive end that led to 22 second-chance points.

Roger Williams, however, took the lead for good on a jumper by Ariola with 12:15 left, 8-7. Then Renwick scored on a pair of coast-to-coast layups after stealing the ball on consecutive WNE possessions to key a 17-1 run in a span of about 7 minutes for a 21-8 cushion.

Roger Williams led 38-26 at the halftime break.

Western New England scored the first seven points in the second half, capped by an Alicia Lewis trey to pull within 38-33. Roger Williams responded with an 8-0 run to go up 46-33 at the 15:25 mark.

The Golden Bears, however, didn't back down and managed to get within four points, 58-54, at 5:16 on the scoreboard clock after trailing by 14 in the second half.

On the ensuing possession, Roger Williams nailed a 3-pointer from Bovee with the shot clock winding down to spark another run that got the lead eventually back into double-digits and prevent another WNE comeback.

The Golden Bears showed good ball movement and broke the Hawks' press for most of the night, but shot only 35.6 percent from the field on 21-of-59 attempts compared to the Hawks 56.0 clip on 28-of-50 tries.

The WNE bench scored 23 points with senior co-captains Katie Eckert leading the way by scoring 10 points on 3-of-7 from the field while knocking down two 3-pointers and Ali Pessolano netting eight points and two assists. Roger Williams had 11 points by their reserves.

The Golden Bears' next matchup is at Gordon College on Tuesday in another CCC contest.
