Taylor Scialdone each recorded a hat trick, and the nation's top-ranked offense also had its best defensive effort so far in 2014, as Western New England routed visiting Bridgewater State, 15-5, in a non-conference women's lacrosse contest at Golden Bear Stadium on Thursday afternoon. Bridgewater State falls to 1-1 while the Golden Bears stay perfect on the season at 3-0.
Taylor Clancy paced the Bridgewater State effort with three goals, five ground balls and four draw controls. Braylan Wenzel and Mariah McKenna scored the Bears other two goals. Riley Cachelin was credited with an assist. Clancy became the first player in program history to eclipse 200 ground balls (204), and she also moved into third place on the Bears' all-time draw control list as she now has 161 in her career.
Western New England built a 6-0 lead after the opening 11 minutes and 8 seconds, and never looked back. Scannapieco scored twice and senior tri-captain
Kelsey Sherman added a man-up goal to key the scoring run.
After Clancy and Wenzel scored two of the game's next three goals to bring the Bears within 7-2, the Golden Bears got goals from Scialdone, junior
Kaitlynn Stevens and sophomore
Kelsey Armstrong within a 3:24 span to give WNE a commanding 10-2 advantage at halftime. It was Armstrong's first marker of the season.
Western New England outscored the Bears 5-3 in the second half, including Scannapieco's third of the day at the 14:29 that gave WNE its largest lead at 14-3.
Besides the scoreboard, WNE also dominated in other phases of the game including ground balls (34-21), draw controls (13-9), shots (29-16), shots on goal (23-12), caused turnovers (8-4) and clears (14-of-16, 10-of-20).
Scannapieco finished with six ground balls and a game-high six draw controls, while sophomore
Bethany Peters chipped in a pair of goals and eight ground balls to lead all student-athletes.
Junior goalie
Emily Castleman made seven saves for WNE and lowered her goals-against average to 6.43, as the Golden Bears held Bridgewater State to an opponent-low five goals. Chandler Ross made eight stops for the Bears on the other end of the field.
Western New England closes a three-game homestand at 1 p.m. Saturday against Smith College in another non-conference tilt.
