SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Western New England used a fast start in the first half en route to a 16-5 drubbing of visiting Smith College in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Golden Bear Stadium on Saturday. The Pioneers fall to 0-2 on the season while the Golden Bears start 4-0 for the second consecutive year.

Jenny Estes and Rachel Silveria paced the Pioneers with two goals each and Jessica Lillquist also found the back of the net.
Sherman and Stevens scored 10 seconds apart beginning at the 29:45 mark to set the tone for a potent WNE offensive attack, which scored the first seven goals--by seven different scorers--of the game with 8 minutes and 2 seconds gone. Western New England enjoyed a 12-1 cushion at the intermission.
Possession played a key role in WNE's dominance on the scoreboard, as the Golden Bears had 15 draw controls to eight for Smith (11-3 in the first half) and 15-of-21 clears to 12-for-21, respectively. Junior
Jessica Scannapieco had nine draw controls and Stevens' recorded four for WNE. Silveria led Smith with three.
Western New England also had a slight 26-25 advantage in ground balls, led by sophomore
Tori Cirocco with four. Smith goalie Merric Kallfelz, who finished with 10 saves, led all players with six.

Melissa Perry each played a half. Castleman started and got the win after making four saves while allowing one goal. Perry played the final 30 minutes and made seven stops while allowing four goals.
Smith converted only two goals on 14 free-position shots.
Silveria opened the scoring in the second half at 28:03 before WNE countered with two off the sticks of Stevens and Cirocco. Then the teams alternated the last five goals.
Next up, the Golden Bears travel to South Hadley on Tuesday (5 p.m.) to take on Mount Holyoke in a rematch of the 2013 Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III New England Championship won by the Lyons, 17-16.
