BEVERLY, Mass.--Senior
Shelby Trebbe scored three of her four goals in the second half to spark Western New England to a come-from-behind 9-7 victory over Endicott in a battle for first place in Commonwealth Coast Conference women's lacrosse action at Endicott Stadium on Tuesday.
With their school-record 20th consecutive win during the regular season dating to last season, the visiting Golden Bears (14-0, 6-0) take over first place in the CCC standings from the Gulls (11-3, 6-1), who have been receiving votes in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association Division III national poll for much of this season after defeating No. 15 Bates, 11-10, on March 19.
With WNE trailing 6-5, Trebbe tied the game with a man-down goal from junior tri-captain
Jessica Scannapieco with 12 minutes and 8 seconds left. Trebbe added another tally at the 9:21 mark to ignite four unanswered goals by the Golden Bears, who took command 9-6.
Trebbe finished with five points while Scannapieco scored two goals and assisted on two others and sophomore
Taylor Scialdone added a hat trick.
For Endicott, Emily Whitney led all scorers with four goals and Callie Murphy had a game-high four assists among five points.
Whitney staked the home team to a 2-0 lead by the 20:53 mark of the first half, as both teams were running their offenses meticulously to start.
After Trebbe cut the deficit in half on a free-position shot, Endicott scored back-to-back goals by Katie Tierney and Rachel Campos 57 seconds apart for a 4-1 lead. The teams traded goals by Scialdone and Whitney to close the scoring in the first half.
Endicott held advantages in draw controls (13-5) and ground balls (18-14), but WNE made the most of its possessions. After trailing 5-2 at the intermission, WNE outscored the Gulls 7-2 in the second half when they held a 15-9 shots lead.
Western New England began the second with three goals from Scannapieco, Scialdone and Trebbe as the Golden Bears tied it 5-5 at 17:07 showing on the scoreboard clock.
Then 1:42 later, Murphy gave the Gulls their last lead at 6-5 with 15:25 to go before the Golden Bears tied the score on Trebbe's man-down tally and took their first lead of the afternoon with the go-ahead goal by Trebbe again.
Both goalies finished with eight saves--junior
Emily Castleman in the WNE net and her counterpart Ryan Socolow. Castleman leads the CCC with 13 wins.
Sophomore
Emma Norden aided the WNE defense with team-bests of two caused turnovers and three ground balls.
After four consecutive road games, Western New England returns home on Thursday (4 p.m.) to square off against non-conference foe Lasell at Golden Bear Stadium.
