Maria Francese, were named All-Commonwealth Coast Conference, it was announced on Saturday. Eckert and Francese joined sophomore pitcher
Heidi Grieger on the all-conference second team.
A center fielder from Hinsdale (Wahconah Regional High School), Francese is a three-time All-CCC selection. This spring, the sport management major paces Western New England with a .386 batting average that ranks 13th in the league. She has a fifth-CCC-leading 44 hits, which gives her 198 for her Golden Bear career heading into the postseason. She has stolen 13 bases (and caught just once) to pace the conference, which is one shy from her career best of 14 set last season.
Eckert, who is a four-year starter at third base, is batting and slugging a career-best .312 and .398, respectively. Her 20 runs batted in, which is another personal record, tops the Golden Bears. The Lee High graduate is majoring in psychology.
Like Eckert, Grieger (Hyde Park, N.Y./Franklin D. Roosevelt HS) makes her All-CCC debut after having her best season in the circle. The forensic chemistry major leads WNE with a 7-6 won-lost record, ranking ninth in the conference in victories, and 1.71 earned-run average for fifth. While shaving more than two runs off her ERA as a freshman, 2014 opponents are hitting just .221 against her which is good for third in the CCC.
