Top-Seeded Western New England Stunned by Hawks in CCC Semifinals, 19-11

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--The top-seeded Western New England University women's lacrosse team was upended by No. 4 Roger Williams University, 19-11, in the 2014 Commonwealth Coast Conference Semifinals at Golden Bear Stadium on Wednesday.

The visiting Hawks (11-7) advance to play in Saturday's championship game at Endicott College, which downed Gordon College 15-7 in today's other CCC semifinal. Despite seeing their school-record 17-game win streak in a single season snapped, the Golden Bears (17-1) are still hopeful for a bid to the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship or Eastern College Athletic Conference New England Tournament.

Junior tri-captain Jessica Scannapieco led Western New England with four goals, game highs of 11 ground balls and four caused turnovers and five draw controls. Sophomore Taylor Scialdone (3 ground balls) added a hat trick among four points, and junior Kaitlynn Stevens had two goals and an assist to go along with five ground balls.

Kelsey Rahilly pumped in four goals and six assists to pace all scorers with 10 points for Roger Williams, which enjoyed an 8-5 lead at halftime. Deven Machette contributed five goals, seven points, seven ground balls and eight draw controls.

Roger Williams used a strong possession game (22 to 10 on draw controls) to outshoot WNE 29 to 21 on goal and never let the Golden Bears lead in the contest. The Hawks scored the game's first three goals--Jessica Searl, Mackenzie Logan, Kelsey Rahilly-- after winning the first three draw controls before Stevens cut the deficit to one with back-to-back tallies by the 16:46 mark on the clock.

But Roger Williams took command by getting five of the next six goals for an 8-3 lead with 5:42 to go in the first half.

Western New England scored the last two goals of the half and three of the first four to begin the second as part of a 5-1 scoring run of its own to trail 9-8 with 24:37 left in the game. Scialdone had two goals and an assist during that stretch.

The Hawks, however, seized control again with a four-goal streak--including three by Machette--to make it 13-8. Scannapieco then scored two goals within a span of 39 seconds, but WNE couldn't get within three goals after that.

Western New England did have a 39 to 35 advantage in ground balls, led by Scannapieco, Stevens and sophomore Megan Clune with four.

Caitlin Shanahan and Kimberly Bolk led RWU's defensive effort with six ground balls and 10 saves, respectively. Logan won nine draw controls, had four points and scooped up four ground balls.

Both teams had 18 turnovers.
