Box Score HARTFORD, Conn.--Senior
Kasey Cameron and junior
Olivia Lathrop combined for 21 kills on 35 attack attempts without an error, and senior
Kendra Ouimette served up a season-best seven aces, to pace Western New England to a 25-17, 25-8, 25-11 non-conference sweep of Eastern Connecticut State in the opening round of the Trinity College Volleyball Invitational on Friday evening. The Golden Bears improve to 7-2 on the season while the Warriors lost their second-straight to slip to 4-3.
Cameron had a breakout performance after starting her season slowly due to an injury, connecting for a team-high 12 kills on 22 attempts, and Lathrop added nine kills on 13 swings. As a team, Western New England had 40 kills in 95 attempts with only 11 errors in 95 attempts for a .305 attack percentage.
Ouimette, meanwhile, was the catalyst for a solid serve-receive game by having her most aces since at least her freshman year. With 18 aces on the season, she passed Katharina Boes (205 from 2007-10) and is now tied with Jill Luby (1999-2001) for fifth place on the WNE all-time list with 208.
"We served very aggressively throughout the match tonight," Western New England coach Bret Stothart says, "which really helped us win the serve-and-pass part of the game. It was a solid team effort and hopefully we can continue to play well in both matches tomorrow."
After a see-saw first-set, Western New England took control in the second by hitting for a .390 percentage on 12-3-23 totals.
Sophomore setters
Jessica Sincero and
Jenna Leuck directed the WNE offense with 15 assists apiece while Sincero and Leuck had four and eight digs, respectively. Sincero also led the Golden Bears with three total blocks.
Defensively, Ouimette had a team-high 13 digs, senior All-America libero
Grace Kucharski made 11 and Cameron added nine.
The Golden Bears will continue TC Invitational action tomorrow against the host Bantams (11 a.m.) and
Brandeis (1 p.m.).
