Brittany DeLima Nets Three Points Despite Comeback Attempt Foiled by Host Clark, 3-2

Box Score WORCESTER, Mass.--The Western New England University field hockey team made a valiant comeback attempt at Clark University on Saturday, but Zoe LaFrance-Armstrong broke a 2-all tie with 1 minute and 57 seconds remaining in regulation to boost the Cougars to a 3-2 non-conference victory at Granger Turf Field. With the win the Scarlet and White improve to 3-1 on the season while the Golden Bears even out at 2-2.

The goal for LaFrance-Armstrong capped a wild stretch that saw Western New England erase a 2-0 deficit and hold the Cougars without a shot until Kiah Murphy setup the go-ahead marker.

Trailing 2-0 after the intermission, WNE cut that margin in half in the 49th minute when freshman Brittany DeLima notched her team-leading fourth score of the year on a penalty corner. Things stayed that way until late in the game when DeLima teamed up with sophomore Hillary Naranjo-Mejia for the equalizer at 64:06.

The game looked to be headed into extra time until Murphy's assist on LaFrance-Armstrong's second game-winner of the year.

Clark took a 1-0 lead early in the first half when Isabelle Zoeckler found the back of the cage off of a feed from Madison Boardman at 11:02. The Cougars' advantage doubled when Maria Manning scored on a penalty stroke at 30:01.

As you might expect with a close contest, boxscore was close as well. Both teams had six overall shots but the Golden Bears held an 11-3 edge in penalty corners.

Olivia Landry made her first collegiate start in goal for the Cougars and made three saves to earn the win, while freshman Renee Rossignol stopped three shot of her own but falls to 2-2.

Western New England opens up Commonwealth Coast Conference play on Wednesday with a home tilt against Salve Regina, starting at 7 p.m. at Golden Bear Stadium. Clark will return to action on Tuesday when it hosts UMass-Dartmouth also at 7 o'clock in the evening.
