SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Visiting Western New England University gave Springfield College a battle during the doubles round before eventually falling to the Pride, 9-0, in non-conference women's tennis action at the Appleton Courts on Thursday. The Golden Bears fall to 4-3 on the season while Springfield wins its first match after starting out 0-3.
Springfield started the match with three points after the conclusion of doubles. Freshman
Lauren Sell and sophomore
Joeanna Glantz tested Stephanie Foster/Rachel London at No. 1, 8-5. Ariana Shemms/Melanie Thulin were able to double up freshman
Christina D'Agostino and junior co-captain
Kelly Byrnes, 8-4, at No. 2, while the No. 3 team Stephani Post and Rachel Litchfield downed freshmen
Alice Mathews and
Jessica Breitweg, 8-3.
In singles, Glantz fell to Foster in the No. 2 position, 6-1, 6-4, and sophomore
Corey St. Louis also won five games in a No. 5 loss to Shemms, 6-2, 6-3.
Western New England will have a quick turnaround as the Golden Bears return to action on Saturday (noon) when they travel to Milton to take on Curry College in Commonwealth Coast Conference play.
