Golden Bears Hold Visiting Endicott to One Goal in Second Half of 4-0 CCC Loss

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--The Western New England University field hockey team held visiting Endicott College to just one goal in the second half, but the Gulls were able to jump out to a three-goal lead in the first en route to a 4-0 Commonwealth Coast Conference victory at Golden Bear Stadium on Saturday. The Golden Bears fall to 2-4 on the season and 0-2 in the CCC, while Endicott improves to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

Morgan Bresnahan led the Gulls with a pair of goals. Keepers Rose Bradley (2 saves) and Francheska Ventura combined on the shutout while each playing a half, with Bradley starting and getting credit for the victory.

Freshman Allison Jackson paced the Western New England offense with three shots, followed by classmate Brittany DeLima and senior co-captain Megan French with two apiece.

Ashleigh Allen provided all the offense Endicott would need when she scored her fourth goal, unassisted, off a scramble in front in the sixth minute. Bresnahan scored her first tally of the afternoon in the 21st minute on a nice pass down low from Amanda Glynn following a Gulls penalty corner. Bresnahan closed the scoring in the 34th minute of the first half when she took a feed at the left post from Emily Sawchuck across the mouth of the goal and tapped it in for a 3-0 cushion and her fifth goal of 2014.

Western New England was able to hold the CCC's second-best offense (22 goals in seven games) to just 13 shots, including eight on goal. The teams had seven shots apiece in the opening 35 minutes.

Western New England had a few good scoring chances in the second half. DeLima got a steal off a turnover in the midfield and dribbled down the field before the Gulls defense caught up with her just in front of the cage. In the 68th minute, freshman Michelle Carlson's shot went just wide. And then 58 seconds later, French had a long blast that went wide left of the cage.

Freshman Renee Rossignol had four saves in the WNE goal.

Brittany Bushey scored Endicott's final goal in the 64 minute into the upper left-corner off a shot-pass from Mackenzie Hurst just inside the circle.

Endicott had a decided advantage in penalty corners, 14 to five.

Western New England is back in action at 7 p.m. Tuesday when the Golden Bears host Roger Williams University in another CCC encounter to complete a three-game homestand.
