SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Junior defender
Erica Parlavecchio scored her first two career goals in a Western New England University uniform to propel the Golden Bears to a 3-1 non-conference women's soccer victory over visiting Elms College at Suprenant Field on Tuesday. The Golden Bears remain unbeaten at home at 2-0-1 and move to 3-4-2 overall, while the Blazers slip to 1-5.
Also figuring into the Golden Bears' scoring were junior
Emma Norden with her third goal in the 55th minute, and senior
Tayler Mazurski assisted on all three of the goals this afternoon. Norden leads the team in goal-scoring and Mazurski (1 goal, 4 assists) is tied with the former in point-scoring at six.
Jackie Soucia spoiled WNE's shutout bid with her second goal of the season with a minute and 9 seconds left in regulation. Kylen O'Hearn caught the WNE defense flat-footed with a long pass from midfield over the top and Soucia was able to slide the shot under the hands of the sliding Golden Bears keeper.
Western New England scored the first two goals of the game on set pieces off corner kicks. In the 10th minute, Mazurski curled a drive that Parlavecchio headed off the right post and into the back of the goal. Then the duo connected again just 4 minutes and 42 seconds later when Parlavecchio pounced on Mazurski's service that was mishandled by the Elms keeper and she slotted a shot inside the left post.
The Golden Bears third goal at the 55th minute came during the run of play and Mazurski again started it. She dribbled down the right side and sent a crisp, low cross inside the penalty area where Norden drilled a one-timer into the lower right-corner of the net from about 12 yards out.
Junior
Briana Kubik had five saves for WNE while her counterpart Alexa Rinaudo finished with four.
Elms had a slight shots advantage at 12-9 and both teams recorded three corners.
Western New England's next contest will be at 11 a.m. Saturday against CCC foe Gordon College at Suprenant Field.
