Host Western Connecticut State Shuts Out Women's Soccer, 2-0, in Non-Conference

Box Score DANBURY, Conn. - Goals by Lindsay Jossick and Emily Newhard guided the Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team to a 2-0 non-conference victory over visiting Western New England University at the Westside Athletic Complex on Wednesday night. Both teams are now 1-2 on the season.

In the 41st minute, Jossick scored her first goal as a Colonial after she collected a loose ball in front of the goal. Alexya Alves' initial shot caromed off junior keeper Briana Kubik and onto the waiting boot of Jossick. Newhard added her first goal of the season, an unassisted insurance marker 9 minutes and 4 seconds into the second half.

Freshman keeper Jillian Fernandez recorded a clean sheet, her first collegiate shutout, by making five saves.

Kubik made 10 saves in the loss to help keep Western New England close as the Colonials rattled off 26 shots, including 16 in the first half.

The Golden Bears' offense just couldn't get on track, recording five shots on goal. Junior Emma Norden led with two, followed by sophomores Katelyn Cummings, Samantha Emmert and senior Tayler Mazurski with one apiece.

Western New England returns to the pitch on Saturday (1 p.m.) when it travels to Plymouth, N.H., for a non-conference date with Plymouth State University.
