Second-Half Goal Dooms Western New England versus Babson at Mayor's Cup Opener

Box Score ONEONTA, N.Y.--Justin Laurenzo scored the only goal of the game in the 59th minute to carry fifth-ranked Babson to a 1-0 win over No. 10 Western New England in the opening round of the SUNY Oneonta Mayor's Cup at Red Dragon Soccer Field on Friday afternoon. Rankings are for the New England region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

The Beavers (3-0) broke a scoreless tie 14 minutes into the second half when Laurenzo pounced on a loose ball deflected by a Western New England defender just inside the top of the penalty area and rifled a shot pass sophomore keeper Kevin Strobel (4 saves) into the lower left-corner of the net.

One of the best scoring opportunities for Western New England (2-2) came moments before in the 50th minute when sophomore Ryan Dickinson's shot went just wide from close range. On the previous play, junior co-captain Colin Macdonald's blast sailed high over the crossbar.

Shots were fairly even as Babson had a slight advantage at 11-7 overall and 5-4 with shots on goal. Junior Luis Agrait led WNE with two shots on goal.

Corner kicks were 5 to 1 in favor of the Beavers, who held a 5-1 shots advantage after 45 minutes.

Babson's Tanner Click matched Strobel with four stops.

Western New England is back in action on Saturday when it will face either RIT or the host Red Dragons in the Mayor's Cup third-game game, beginning at 1 p.m.
